2006 INVOC Club Handicap Championships - 25th June at Rogie The handicap race provided a very close finish. Elaine Jones came in with a clear lead only to miss the last checkpoint by 30 seconds. This was enough for Sam Newmark to catch Elaine and they shared first position in a sprint finish. Ken Naismith was watching his back to protect his position not realising that the sprint ahead was for the championship thus finishing a few seconds back in third place. Ken, never look back just forward, even if a couple Ladies are chasing you! That was Lesley Campbell and Val Springett sharing fourth place just behind Ken. All five competitors finished just inside 50 Minutes. Most competitors came in inside 60 Minutes making it a very competitive and fun event. The terrain at Rogie is superb for organising a handicap event, as it is very technical but with a mass of features, which make it possible to create courses of similar technical difficulties but different lengths. There were also a number of budding new orienteeers doing the short course, won by Harry Newmark. We did hear a few complaints that the parents could not keep up with the young competitors, certainly not with Harry. More training required for the parents! I would also like to express my thanks to Wilf Taylor from Devon OK based at the Met office in Exeter, who as controller also organised the superb orienteering weather. Thanks also to Mary Naismith running the finish. Finally a big thank you to Sue, for the administration and for organising the `aprés’ orienteering and to the orienteers who helped collect the controls.
