2005 INVOC Club Handicap Championships - 19th June at Plodda Falls |

The handicap race provided one of the closest finishes for a couple of years. Lilian came in with a clear lead to the last checkpoint, gave everything she had with a furious sprint over Plodda Falls car park but to no avail. James, with youth on his side, just had that little extra to overtake Lilian in the last few meters. Lilian very sportingly did not use her stick to trip James up although I am not that sure that the rest of us would been that fair! The race for the last podium place was nearly as close as Dick with Ray and Jacquie close on his heels finished in third place in 51 minutes, one minute behind the winner. So in this case, age and experience triumphed over youth! The guest runners ended up in the middle of the field. It is great to have a handicap system, which keeps them away from the top places! The terrain at Plodda is very hard; after all this area was used for both the qualification and classical races at the World Championships in 1999. Not surprisingly we had a few retirements. Was this the reason or was it the tension of a mass start, which disturbed the focus of the competitors who normally do so well? We can only guess. I would also like to express my thanks to Ken Naismith who as controller came out with me to hang the checkpoints. At least we had each others company whilst lost in the forest. And thanks to Sue, for the administration and for organising the 'aprés orienteering'. Thanks also to the orienteers who helped collect the controls.
