North Clubs

If you're totally new to the sport, we would be delighted to have you join us. We're a family-friendly club, and whilst we do enjoy a bit of friendly competition, what really motivates us is bringing newcomers into our sport. Orienteering is a small community, growing all the time - and those that get into it display a tendency to get hooked for life!

In 2015 the Highlands played host to the World Orienteering Championships and the Scottish 6 Days event.  These events helped to increase the popularity of the sport in the area, along with providing a financial boost to the local community.  In May 2018 we shall be co-hosting the Scottish Championships with one of our neighbouring clubs.  With Royal Deeside being the venue for the British Championships the following week, now is a great time to take up, or renew your interest in orienteering.

Orienteering is an excellent family activity as there are courses to suit all abilities – from White (easy) courses for the little ones, right up to the highest technical difficulty courses of Blue and Brown.  It’s not always the fastest runner who gets the best time – you need to be running in the correct direction in orienteering to be good.  Age categories range from W/M10 to W/M85, so it really is an activity for all.  It’s also a very sociable sport as there is always someone to discuss your course with afterwards – it’s a bit like when you come out of an exam and you want to discuss how you answered questions – you’ll often hear participants asking each other “what route did you take to that Control?”.  Post-event discussions are a great way of learning different aspects of orienteering.
